Kreschatik is а heart and a business centre in Kiev. It passes through Pechersky and Shevchenkovsky areas, from European to the Bessarabsky area, between the Vladimirsky hill and Lipki. People have started to build up Khrechatik only in the end of the 18 century. At the time of the Kiev Russia on a Kreschatik place the was a stream. It was the favourite place for hunting of the Kiev princes. The first name of Kreschatik was Pereviseshche, a place where people caught a wild animal.
Later a valley began to call khreschatoy since it was crossed by many ravines. In 16-17century this district became known as the Evsejkova valley; and in 17century – the Sand.
Around modern Majdan Nezalezhnosti (Square of Independence) there was a lake from which the stream followed around Bessarabsky square. Along this stream there was the way to Cornflowers lay.
Kreschatik building passed till 1806. It has been built up only to street Prorezna. Around the Maidan there were a lot of shafts which surrounded a city. In the beginning of the street Sofievsky there was Ljadska Brama (collar). In the beginning of 18 century Grushevsky's street and the Vladimirky descent were passed through Khreschatik.
The first houses on Khreschatik have appeared 1797. Constructions were wooden. In 1803 the first city theatre in Kiev has been constructed (architect A.I.Melensky). The building was wooden. From that time this street began to name Teatralnoj. In 1851 the old construction have taken down, and on its place has built a hree-storyed hotel "European" (architect O.V.Beretti). The name Kreschatik began to be used in 1834-69. The official decision about the statement of the name of the street was accepted in 1869г.
Golovinsky's house was the first stone house constructed on Khreschatik. In 1978-82 on its place people have constructed a new building, it was a museum of V.I.Lenin – now it is the Ukrainian House where heid various exhibitions, conferences, congresses, concerts.
High-grade building of Kreschatik as a streets has begun only in 1930-40 in 19century.
As the main street Khreschatik have prolonged to Bessarabsky square and its length has made 1.2 km.
In 1890 on Kreschatik the route of the first horse tram was laid. In 1892 – the first, in Russia and the second in Europe, electric tram has connected Kreschatik with the Hem.
In 1894 the first power station has been constructed , near the Mmunicipal duma.
In 1904 Kreschatik's roadway have replaced with granite cubes. And in the beginning 20 century Kreschatik began to look like the European shopping centre.
After the Second World War almost all old houses have been destroyed. The modern sight of Kreschatik - is already post-war re-planning.
Street have considerably expanded and have built up with new skyscrapers.
The modern Kreschatik with its magnificent chestnuts and fountains is not just the central street of Kiev - iIt is a symbol of all Ukraine.
